Litchfield by the Sea History

In 1978 The Litchfield Company, located in the heart of Pawley's Island, set out to create a private beachside resort that offered homeowners and vacationers a scenic retreat from the Litchfield Beach area. Litchfield by the Sea was a prime location; its north side bordered by Huntington Beach State Park and Atalaya Castle; to the east the brilliant blue Atlantic Ocean; and to the south, Hobcaw Barony, one of South Carolina's oldest plantations and natural wildlife preserves. All of this was just a stones throw away from one of largest walk-through sculpture gardens in the world, Brookgreen Gardens. The Litchfield Company knew a wonderful development opportunity when they saw one, but they had no way of knowing their "off the beaten path" project would one day become one of the largest, most sought after residential and off season vacation resorts on the east coast.
