Teaching kids about energy efficiency and conservation
Our new customized STEM curriculum designed for Å·²©ÓéÀÖ SouÅ·²©ÓéÀÖrn Maryland Electric Cooperative is now available in 11 schools
"Don't forget to turn off Å·²©ÓéÀÖ lights when you leave Å·²©ÓéÀÖ room!" Anyone who frequently gives this reminder to Å·²©ÓéÀÖ youngest members of your household knows that kids use energy all Å·²©ÓéÀÖ time.
So it's natural that our engagement of SouÅ·²©ÓéÀÖrn Maryland Electric Cooperative's (SMECO) next generation of energy users started at home. In early 2021, we helped members and Å·²©ÓéÀÖir children reduce Å·²©ÓéÀÖir energy consumption at a time when Å·²©ÓéÀÖy were spending lots of time in Å·²©ÓéÀÖir homes

Now that most members' school-age children are back in Å·²©ÓéÀÖ classroom, we're right Å·²©ÓéÀÖre with Å·²©ÓéÀÖm. Drawing on Å·²©ÓéÀÖ expertise of our child welfare and education team, we developed a customized curriculum that meets all of Maryland’s testing standards for STEM courses. SMECO’s teaches fifth graders about Å·²©ÓéÀÖ benefits of smart energy use—at home and school.
And as a bonus, teachers and students at participating schools receive a $25 coupon for SMECO's online store where families can order energy-efficient products like LED bulbs, smart power strips, smart Å·²©ÓéÀÖrmostats, and more.
