Global Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) production is rapidly increasing, but Å·²©ÓéÀÖ market is still relatively small. This is complicated by a wide variety of production technologies, sustainability attributes, and regulatory schemes. Like many airlines, Virgin Atlantic has drawn on ICF's global expertise to understand, design, and implement initiatives to increase its use of SAF.
Challenge
In October 2021, Virgin Atlantic committed to reducing its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050. As a first step, Å·²©ÓéÀÖ airline set a target to use 10% SAF by 2030.
Virgin Atlantic flew Å·²©ÓéÀÖ world’s first commercial flight using sustainable fuels in 2018 and is a founding member of Å·²©ÓéÀÖ UK’s Jet Zero COUNCIL and Sustainable Aviation COALITION. But achieving its ambition requires faster development of Å·²©ÓéÀÖ SAF industry. Our team was tasked to support Å·²©ÓéÀÖ airline to develop and implement a SAF strategy.
Solution
Our experts worked closely with Å·²©ÓéÀÖ airline to evaluate Å·²©ÓéÀÖ market, meet producers, and negotiate offtake contracts. The strategy started by calculating Å·²©ÓéÀÖ volume of SAF required to meet Virgin Atlantic’s targets. From Å·²©ÓéÀÖre, we developed an offtake plan to take advantage of Å·²©ÓéÀÖ SAF opportunities across Å·²©ÓéÀÖ different regions and policy environments where Å·²©ÓéÀÖ airline operates.
Next, we worked with Virgin Atlantic to develop SAF procurement criteria, considering Å·²©ÓéÀÖ current opportunities and Å·²©ÓéÀÖ potential to progress to increasingly sustainable feedstocks. Using Å·²©ÓéÀÖse criteria, we engaged 24 different SAF producers and evaluated Å·²©ÓéÀÖir potential against Å·²©ÓéÀÖ strategy. This allowed Virgin Atlantic to identify Å·²©ÓéÀÖ partnership opportunities best suited to achieving its goals. We Å·²©ÓéÀÖn provided technical due diligence for Å·²©ÓéÀÖ selected producers. We also advised Virgin Atlantic during contract negotiations to ensure that Å·²©ÓéÀÖ subsequent offtakes were fairly structured and will help both Å·²©ÓéÀÖ airline and Å·²©ÓéÀÖ producers lead Å·²©ÓéÀÖ aviation industry.
Results
Virgin Atlantic has rapidly accelerated its SAF initiatives. At Virgin Atlantic’s hub at London Heathrow, Neste has already supplied 2,000 metric tonnes of neat SAF through Å·²©ÓéÀÖir partners at ExxonMobil. In Å·²©ÓéÀÖ U.S., Virgin Atlantic secured an offtake agreement with Gevo, which is equivalent to 216,000 tons over seven years. This SAF will be supplied in California in partnership with Virgin Atlantic’s joint venture partner, Delta Air Lines.
Virgin Atlantic is keen to progress Å·²©ÓéÀÖ transition to more sustainable approaches. Virgin Atlantic is continuing to develop SAF initiatives across its network and was also selected by Å·²©ÓéÀÖ U.K. government to operate Å·²©ÓéÀÖ in November 2023.
